Meet Nathaniel Mensah
Nathaniel Mensah is a language educator and researcher from Ghana whose work asks a simple but unsettling question: when schools tell multilingual children to speak the dominant language, who does that serve and who does it cost? After teaching English across Ghana and Thailand and directing a community child development centre, Nathaniel brought his experience to the United States, where he is completing a Master of Arts in TESOL at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. He currently teaches intercultural communication, conducts research on multilingual education policy, and works with middle school students from ten countries in a suburban Illinois literacy programme. He speaks Fante, Twi, Thai and English and he has never forgotten what it cost him to keep two of those languages outside the classroom door.
